Part I

A sound of the engine of an airplane, scattering the gloomy clouds in the sky, interrupted for a moment, two people talking…
Benimaru Nikaido put a bag next to his feet as his gaze slowly followed the airplane to distance… Towards him, was Duolon’s solid body.
When it comes to this elusive mysterious man, strangely enough, I get to understand him. It’s a man who basically lives in a separate world, different than mine. At least that’s how Benimaru sees it.
“…hospitalized??”
Having been interrupted by the sound of the engine, Duolon reiterated.
“Kusanagi Kyo… is…??”
“It’s more like a medical examination! …I can’t say whether it’s serious or not for him. Shingo, however, has been seriously injured as he tried to stop Yagami. His whole body bones have been fractured; one or two months won’t be enough for him to recover!”
But then, he should be thankful to just being alive. Having faced Yagami Iori after he entered the riot of blood, and survived it, is being very fortunate indeed.
Duolon put his hands in his long coat’s pockets, walked a bit away from Benimaru, and slowly closed his eyes sighing quietly.
“…So, you’re heading back home?”
“Well yes, for now… He’s not the kind of person to abandon with just that. This means, he must be looking for a team by now. And there can’t be a better teammate [than me], right?”
“That’s how it is?”
“Yeah that’s it!”
Benimaru gave a big nod, before suddenly continuing:
“... You’re still after that man, aren’t you?”
“What do you mean?”
“Don’t play dumb with me! Don’t forget that I already encountered him before! ”
“…Indeed”
Duolon, a member of the Hizoku clan of assassins, has been continuously seeking the one that has betrayed his family and abandoned them… his own father, Ron. For someone like him, who is normally supposed to stay in the shadows, to repeatedly enter such a high mediatized competition as “the king of fighters”, it is probably for the sake of tracking Ron’s whereabouts.
The summer breeze calmly bending his blonde hair, Benimaru added…
“If I ever happen to meet that man somewhere, I’ll let you know!”
“I’m grateful to you Nikaido, for helping with my burden”
“I don’t need any thanks! … Instead, you could let me know if you ever encounter that little brat.”
Duolon stopped for a while then stared at Benimaru…
“…What kind of business do you have with Ash?”
“Personally I don’t, but HE probably does… After all, everyone has been "tricked" (I’m being very polite here with this word) by that Ash, some way or another, right?”
“Still worrying about Kyo… you really are a guardian!”
“Cut it ooout!”
Once more Benimaru smiled then looked at his watch, before pulling up himself from the fence.
“…Okay, it’s about boarding time.”
“Take care…”
Duolon, plainly, threw these few words at Benimaru who walked away with his bag on his shoulder. Such a cold nonchalant words despite seeing his friend off.
Benimaru turned his head over his shoulder…
“…After all, it might not take long before we meet again.”
“But this time not as teammates”
“…Yeah!”
Once again, a big plane lands nearby. The strong wind that she surged, throws both men’s long hair flowing. And once again, their conversation is interrupted.
Benimaru, after turning his head from the strong wind, looks back at Duolon to greet him one last time, but the long and thin dark silhouette, standing there a moment ago, had already vanished…
“…He’ll probably never change.”
A light rub on his small nose, then he shook his bag and walked away…

Part II

How much the land in this neighborhood could be exactly worth? There is no way an untrained man like Benimaru would know… But even for him, it’s obvious that this is no bargain material.
Having installed such a huge residence in this neighborhood, this alone must have required wealth obviously, but also power and notoriety.
And the descendants of the ancient Kagura family seem to just have that kind of power.
Benimaru was by the side of a pond in the vast garden, absent-mindedly watching a group of carps swimming graciously in calm water, when he heard a silky sound and looked back.
“…When did you come back to Japan?”
It was the voice of a beautiful black-haired Japanese lady in a classy purplish yukata… the voice of Kagura Chizuru.
“Just a few hours ago”
“I’ve always been jealous of your light footwork”
With a discreet sad smile, Chizuru elegantly tidily sat down on the Tatami covered veranda facing the garden.
This year, Japan has been particularly humid. But, the unclearness that showed in Chizuru’s face was not merely because of the hot weather.
After serving them cold Ujicha “a refined green tea that Kyoto is known for”, Benimaru waited until they were alone then asked Chizuru straight on.
“It doesn’t seem your condition’s got any better, Chizuru”
“Yes, my body has recovered from injuries… However, my strength…”
“Umm…”
“By the way Nikaido, I’m sorry I forgot to congratulate you for winning the tournament”
“Don’t even mention it! Isn’t it just frustrating to see your opponent “disappear” in the middle of the fight? There’s nothing to be proud of!”
He lowered the bench and slowly kept agitating his glass. The cold tea left an indistinct sweet taste as he spread though Benimaru’s throat.
Indeed, this feeling is far off of any sense of accomplishment. And after such a vexing event, Benimaru decided to head back to Japan instead.

The current head of the Kagura family: Kagura Chizuru, the successor to the Kusanagi family: Kusanagi Kyo and the Yagami heir: Yagami Iori…
Those three will always be bonded by an ancient legend. The legend of Orochi: earth’s will to protect itself from the greedy arrogant mankind. Engaging in this everlasting battle for survival, the ones that sealed Orochi: the descendants of 3 sacred treasures …
A few years ago [events of KOF'97] when Orochi tried to revive, those three people succeeded to seal it once again. But in the events of the last KOF tournament, they encountered a mighty powerful new threat that could be comparable to Orochi itself: “Those from the distant land” …
This is how they introduced themselves. Their bodies do seem human, but they definitely are not… What are they? What is that “Distant land” ? It still remains a mystery, even for Chizuru’s clan.
Nevertheless, their aim is clear: breaking the seal and put their hands on the power of the awakened Orochi… for the sake of their master…
That’s what Mukai, a member of “Those from the distant land” , has clearly stated when he showed up in front the 3 sacred treasures .

Suddenly, the icy rocks in the glass made a distinctive sound
As if it they were bored, the noise of the cicadas died out unnoticed. The neighborhood was suddenly being covered in a comfortable yet eerie silence.
While staring at the elegant garden, Benimaru broke the silence.
“Tell me Chizuru… What’s become of Orochi’s seal now?”
“Unfortunately… As I lost my powers, the seal was broken.”
Chizuru’s answer sounded plain, but Benimaru could tell by the shameful look on her face, that she had strong feelings about the incident.
“When you say that it’s been broken, you mean Orochi has resurrected somewhere??”
“Probably not… Back when my older sister was killed by Geonitz, the seal was broken as well, but Orochi’s revival was several years afterwards. Besides, the Orochi that was sealed twice won’t awaken fully… The tedious battles with the Kusanagi and Yagami members must have weakened him considerably.”
“So what you’re saying is, for this Orochi spirit to awaken and choose the perfect host, it’ll need quite a while right?”
“That’s most likely the case… Still, not even I have the slightest idea about the location of the released Orochi. If what that man Mukai were to be right, it’s possible that Orochi’s power is already gathering into that group’s “master”…”
“That means not even you Chizuru have a clear reading of these strange events?”
“…It’s humiliating”
Chizuru pinned down her long black hair, then sadly lowered her head.
“Now that I lost the powers of the Yata mirror, I can’t feel the presence of Orochi anymore…”
“There’s nothing to apologize about. If there’s anyone to blame here, it’s got to be that brat!”
The one who manipulated Chizuru were indeed “Those from the distant”, however the one who stole her powers was no other than him: Ash Crimson. Since then, Chizuru’s power as one of the 3 sacred treasures— Chizuru’s power as Orochi seal guardian has been lost.
While slowly shaking her fan, Chizuru muttered.
“Ash Crimson… I wonder who on earth is he?”
“Yeah that has been bothering me too. … He and those bastards with the tedious name seem to have some kind of relation, but no one knows really what kind of relation it is”
During the last two KOF, Benimaru has had the chance to meet with Ash.
In a word, it’s a brat with strange freckles over his face. This teenager who wields a greenish flame, different from that of Kyo’s and the Iori’s; who is he? What are his true intentions? Neither Benimaru, nor Ash’s supposed friend Duolon seem to understand.
Once again, Benimaru headed back towards the pond and stood by his side, fixedly looking at his unstable reflection in the water surface.
“That Ash and those other people… They are clashing too much to be partners, but they don’t feel like some ancient mutual enemies either.”
“Can’t it be that they had mutual agreements at the beginning, and… that boy betrayed them afterwards?”
“Well, who knows…? However, when I teamed up with lady Blanctorche, she did mention something about Ash and her having one common mission. If there’s any betrayal, it’s rather her being betrayed by Ash than anything else. Besides, that rascal said that he simply forgot about any mission whatsoever!”
During the last KOF, Benimaru teamed up with Duolon and Elisabeth Blanctorche.
It’s obvious that Elisabeth’s participation was closely related to Ash; however she never spoke any details concerning her real motivations. At least one thing Benimaru can tell for sure, those two seemed to be bond with quite an intimate relationship.
Benimaru combed his long blonde hair upward then sighed deeply.
“It’s likely that Elisabeth knows all of who that Ash is really and what he is after… And no matter how much I asked, she wouldn’t give me any clue. And I doubt she will anytime soon!”
“I think I can understand that lady’s position… Perhaps, she somehow resembles my old self.”
“Her? In a similar position as you…?”
“Yes. “Those from a distant land”… if you make an analogy between them and Orochi, then this Elisabeth Blanctorche, who regards them as arch-enemies, will surely be in a similar position as me. And if that’s the case, then Ash would probably be…”
“You mean… he is the one that has drifted away… Like what Yagami Iori is for “The 3 sacred treasures”?”
Chizuru slowly turned her back to the confused Benimaru.
“Possibly. In the turmoil of Elisabeth’s fight with “Those from a distant land”, no one knows which side is he in; Ash is in such a position.”
“Anyway, his true aim will eventually uncover as he’s constricting himself more and more. Meanwhile, you have to regain back your powers”
“Yet, we’ll have to figure out his whereabouts…”
“I’m sure we’ll know that very soon”
He had this much certitude… Because since the last time the two men met, Benimaru can still hear Ash’s words.
“That guy [Ash], before stealing the powers of the Yasakani Magatama and escaping, he sure stated it clearly” ---Kyo, next time it’ll be you!

Ash has already stolen the Yata Mirror from Chizuru, then in the chaotic events of the last tournament managed to get his hands on the powers of Yagami Iori’s Yasakani Magatama. With these two sacred treasures that served to weaken and seal Orochi, in his possession, Kyo’s Kusanagi Sword is the last and only treasure that Ash has yet to snatch.
And Ash is boldly stating that he is to obtain it sooner or later.
Chewing thoroughly on her thin red-blooded lips, Chizuru muttered.
“Even if we assume that they have yet to put their hands on Orochi’s power, if by any chance Ash manages to steal Kyo’s Kusanagi Sword, it’ll be impossible to seal Orochi once again.”
“We won’t let it happen!”
Suddenly, a mobile phone started vibrating in Benimaru’s white leather pants’ pocket.
“Seeing how he acted so far, it’s unlikely that Ash will take Kyo head-on. Instead, he’ll wait for some kind of turmoil before making his move. ------ And he’ll probably be using the next KOF settings for just such a thing”
“THAT’s why you…?”
“Why I came back to Japan? Yeah that AND, of course, to see you.”
He picked up the strap, took out his phone then winked teasingly at Chizuru while the phone kept vibrating.
“----A Meeting with teammates is calling! I would have loved to stay longer, but it’s time for me take my leave.”
